Studies post-1945 Japanese cinema, including the Kurosawa epics (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Ran, Dream). Other masters include Ozu, Mizoguchi and Oshima. Examines Indian cinema and Satyajit Ray, and his masterful Apu trilogy. Concentrates on new Asian film, with works by Chinese (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) directors such as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Wong Kar-Wai, Tsai Ming Liang, and Ang Lee.

This course offers an overview of past and present “Asian Cinema”, focusing on post-1945 films (of all genra : melodramas, ghost movies, documentaries, dramas, comedies,…) in order to question the differences in approaching to the medium of film (if any), and to investigate the various asian film traditions mainly in China, Japan, Philippines and Korea (we won’t touch Indian cinema, a world in itself, or Turkish cinema).

We will engage in readings from contemporary film scholars, and students will be asked to present their readings in class. The course is structured around screenings, film analysis (of film sequences), and class lectures / seminars.

Evaluations will mostly consist in film analysis. Students will be asked to take into account the historial/cultural context and aesthetical meaning of the films. Students are not expected to be specialists of asian culture or cinema to take this class. There are no prerequisites for this course.
