Revision and expansion of the skills acquired at the Elementary level and review of grammar knowledge. The main goal at this level is to gain fluency inreading. Texts will be selected according to the interests or needs of the student.

Learning Outcomes

  1. You will learn how to use the tools available for this purpose, such as dictionaries, student commentaries, online texts and online databases.
  2. Engaging closely with the language of your readings, you will begin to see how grammar and vocabulary function to constitute an individual author's style or, e.g., a language characteristic of a genre.
  3. You will begin to shape your own reception of the ancient language and its culture by developing your own focus of interest, ideally connecting it with your other academic, creative or professional projects.
  4. If poetry is being read, you will learn the basics of meter, focusing on the forms you encounter in your readings.
  5. Increasing your reading fluency, you will learn how to translate and make sense of an original text and to take responsibility for the correctness of your understanding.
  6. You will systematically revise and expand your passive vocabulary (which should be c. 2000 words at the beginning) as well as your knowledge of grammar. In this process, you will also develop methods to conduct such revisions independently without the aid of spoon-fed textbook lessons.
  7. You will train your ability to learn actively, in a self-directed manner (i.e. self-organization; awareness of own needs; ability to ask questions, to pinpoint problems and realize whether something has been understood or not) and to use the ancient language independently.
  8. You will have studied more in-depth aspects of our shared cultural and linguistic inheritance stemming from the ancient culture and their reception, including critical reflection on and comparison of ancient and modern concepts, values and cultural practices.
  9. Through direct exposure to original sources and taking the effort to make sense of them yourself, you will become aware of the complexities of studying an ancient culture and the kinds of problems scholarship in Classics needs to address.
