This course continues Elementary Latin I. At the end of the course you will have an overview of Latin grammar and a basic passive vocabulary of c. 2000 words. You will learn how to write simple Latin texts yourself and start to read excerpts of original literature. Specialization on certain classes of texts, e.g., Latin inscriptions, is possible.

Learning Outcomes

  1. You will be able to understand and read fluently written Latin at the level reached in the textbook, and be ready to start reading original texts.
  2. You will be able to use Latin actively yourself, e.g. by writing increasingly complex Latin sentences.
  3. You will have a passive vocabulary of c. 2000 Latin words, i.e. you will know their meaning and understand them. You will be able to learn new words effectively and make educated guesses since you have understood the principles of word formation and realized the presence of Latin in English, French and (depending on your language skills) possibly other modern languages.
  4. You will have a good grasp of all basics of Latin grammar, and you will also be able to explain the grammar of Latin sentences. You will also be able to use your grammar knowledge to analyze long, complex sentences in order to understand them better, and to self-correct your translations by spotting your typical grammar errors.
  5. You will further enhance your understanding of grammar and the workings of language in general and complete your revision (or acquisition) of grammar terms, including the complexities of English, French, Latin (and other) tense systems. You will thus be able to communicate even more effectively about linguistic features of any text in which you are interested.
  6. You will even further enhance your reading and writing skills through intensive experience with explicit and self-directed language learning. In particular, you will train to deal with greater complexity and achieve explanatory skills that may prove useful not only when you teach yourself but also when you happen to tutor others.
  7. If you take a course in this format for the first time: you will enhance your ability to learn actively and independently and acquire a better understanding of your role as a learner: that it is you who do the learning, that learning is not done to you, and how you can take responsibility for both the content and the success of your learning.
  8. You will deepen your acquaintance with ancient Roman culture, both its alterity and continuity, get to know some myths, Latin authors as well as a few facts about early Christianity, and encounter further examples of our common inheritance stemming from ancient Rome and beyond. Increasingly, you will begin to reflect on such examples also as receptions of Latin and Roman culture, i.e. more or less deliberate uses and appropriations of a socio-cultural practice with various functions.
